Chapter1: Thumbnail Drawings
This short length "Start To Finish" DVD introduces the viewer to the art of thumbnails. Thumbnailing is the start to great compositions and explores different routes an artist can take to achieve a balanced work of art. Through on screen demonstration's derek takes you through the process of thumbnailing and shows the advantages of this process. This chapter also deals with how to work out "visual weights" and the use of overlays.
Chapter 2: Blocking In
This chapter starts the process of "blocking in" the major vales and forms of the painting, listing all colour's used to achieve the base colour's and values.
Chapter 3: Building Form
This chapter begins with the break down of the background. With the use of a dry brush technique and a AB turbine airbrush the background is rendered. The use of layering, colour variance, spattering, dabbing and creating depth are demonstrated in this chapter.
Chapter 4: Detailing The Chickadee
The painting now moves into the detailing stage and fine brush work is added. In this chapter the viewer will learn to break down large area's and add realistic detail to the chickadee. Creating depth in the feather and down through directional stroke and value change are techniques preformed in this chapter. The end result is convincing detail that does not over power the viewer.
Chapter 5: Finishing Detail
This chapter shows you how to bring the painting together and add in some final detail. The use of final highlights and shadowing are the emphasis of this finishing chapter. The entire video is re-shown in high speed so the viewer can see the entire process within two minutes.
