Chapter1: The Elements of Design
This chapter starts with the basics of composition, elements. We review what the Elements of design are and how they are applied to art. After a first hand definition of each element an example of how it is applied to a line drawing is given. This gives the viewer a visual reinforcement of what the element is defined as and how it will work in an actual piece of art.

Chapter 2: The Principles Of Design
Once we have learned what the elements of design are we can move on to learn to use them to create principles of design. Through onscreen graphic and first hand examples the viewer will learn what the principles are and how to use them in the process of creating composition.

Chapter 3: Analyzing Composition
In this chapter Derek use's several pieces of his own work to illustrate composition. The viewer will learn how to create a strong visual composition through the use of elements and principles. Strong use of balance, contrast, rhythm, harmony, unity, emphasis, proportion and variety are demonstrated and explained with visual reference in this chapter. Derek explains how all principles are applied and why they are applied. This chapter also covers compositional "do not's" that artist's should avoid.

Chapter 4: Creating Composition
In this chapter Derek demonstrates his process for building a composition. Starting with the analyzing of his reference shots and moving to the choosing of images to use together this chapter illustrates the importance of good reference photography. Step by step Derek builds the composition for his piece "September Serenade" right before your eyes. This chapter explains the use of composing composition with several different looks and explains how to choose which composition will make the strongest visual structure. Learn to create visual movement in your art and create a strong visual rhythm through the use of your elements and principles.

Chapter 5: Reference Photography
"Garbage in, garbage out" is Derek's saying for photographic reference. Derek explains the need for strong reference and demonstrates things to look for in the field. This chapter is an information packed roller coaster ride of over 70 images from Derek's private photo archive. From the use of golden third's to the directional lines, Derek explains how to see and utilize the elements and principles that naturally present themselves in nature and how to capture their presence in your photography.
